Where have all the Donuts Gone?

Every once in a while, I have a weak moment, and when the B Train pulls into my local subway station before the Q Train, I take the B. This is despite the fact that about five minutes into the ride I remember that I hate the B train and I have actually added 20 minutes to my morning commute. This was one of those mornings. I took the B Train to Rockefeller Center and figured, hey, while I'm here, why not pick up breakfast at Dunkin' Donuts?

Now, going to Dunkies in the city is a lot different than going to Dunkies in Rhode Island. Of course, it's been a while since I went to a DD in Rhode Island, so maybe I am just totally mythologizing the experience. When I go to my brother's place in CT, I make him stop at Dunkie's before we get on the highway for Rhode Island. My brother hates this because the Dunkin' Donuts near him is a pick-up spot for day laborers, so the parking lot is always full of guys looking to get picked up for a job and men standing around with clipboards. Last time we went, my Bro stayed in the car. He also hates the counter staff. My brother is racist in the way that young white guys who grew up in white neighborhoods then went to a college with zero diversity, yet worship hip hop and professional spots culture are racist. Namely, everyone who isn't either black or white is suspect. I'm working on him, but it's slow going.

Anyway, so I'm standing around Dunkie's this morning waiting to pick up my order and there is a huge crowd, as per usual. Yet out of nowhere a woman taps me on the shoulder and asks, "Excuse me, but didn't there used to be a Krispy Kreme around here?" This basically confirms my worst fear: that I am a woman who looks like she knows a lot about donuts.

"Yeah it's right .... hey where did it go?" I pointed to where the Krispy Kreme used to be, but it was gone. "Thank you," said the woman, "I thought I was going crazy."

"I guess they closed it. You know, there was never anyone over there. Especially after they opened this place."

"Shit, I have to get breakfast. I buy the Krispy Kremes."

"Don't worry, get em some Dunkin' Donuts. They're decent donuts."

I guess Rock Center wasn't big enough for two donut outposts.

Yeah, I hear they closed all the Krispy Kremes north of the Mason Dixin line, though I feel like the one in Penn Station must still be there.
When they opened one near my parents' house, in Northeast Philly, Dunkin Donuts opened three fucking new places within like a two mile radius. They do not take kindly to competition.
They also have surrounded Dee Dee's donuts on 9th st. in Park Slope.

I'll patronize an independent doughnut shop over a chain any time. But barring a Mom and Pop operation, people gotta learn: you don't mess with the pink and the orange.

this reminds me of yesterday when i went to my oldest brother's house...and he had a box of random donuts just sitting around and he would just offer donuts to any fool that dropped by...

i was like, "hey, why do you have all of these freakin donuts?"

and he was like "yeah i have some connections"

cause he does have connections...like if you need anything...hot electronics...drugs...and now donuts... it's...crazy

krispy kremes are pretty bomb though...once at smith me and josie and some other people drove an hour or so into connecticut to go to krispy kreme...

josie is getting married next yeat btw...i don't know if you remember her...it|s blowing my mind currently

Brooksy, did you ever go to The Donut Man on the way to Amherst?

I remember Josie, I'm not terribly surprised she's getting married. Is she marrying an Egyptian dude? That ought to be one hell of a wedding.
