The other day I was reading a piece in Slate about how sites like CNN.com and MSNBC.com are resorting to "tabloid headlines" to draw web traffic. I have to admit, I clicked on just such a melodramatic headline and found this story about a fire in an apartment building in Germany where nine people were killed. These photos are breathtaking. The uncle of this baby boy, concerned that the smoke was going to overcome the nine-month old infant, took the baby from his mother's arms and dropped him out the window to a police officer waiting four storeys below.

Imagine the faith the uncle must have had in that stranger.

The baby survived the fall and is doing fine. The two-year old brother of the rescued baby died in the fire. The apartment building houses mainly imigrant families. The fire is believed to have been an arson.
