So that's where I put my 30,000 high-calorie crackers.

We in the new millenium are soooo smug. We like to think that people living in 1950's and 60's Cold War America were just plain dumb. Well guess what guys? They weren't just relying on the old "Duck and Cover" plan. They had a backup. That's why they stockpiled drums of water and paper blankets inside the Brooklyn Bridge. Duh.

Oh, the things I learn from NPR:

An article in today's Toronto Star looks at a new study that purports to show that
whiny children grow up to be conservatives ... The whiny kids tended to grow up
conservative, and turned into rigid young adults who hewed closely to
traditional gender roles and were uncomfortable with ambiguity.

The confident kids turned out liberal and were still hanging loose, turning
into bright, non-conforming adults with wide interests. The girls were still
outgoing, but the young men tended to turn a little introspective.

Here is an actual conversation I had with my father this weekend.

"Did you buy a TV yet?"

"No."

"Buy a TV."

"No."

"Buy yourself a TV. I'll give you the money."

"No ... but I'll take your money."

"Just buy a small television so that you can watch the weather and the news while you're getting ready in the morning."

"I get all of that information from NPR."

"D'oh! Don't listen to that liberal bias garbage!"

"Look, I'll admit that some of their social and entertainment programs have a liberal slant, but I find their news coverage to be quite balanced."

"Is it as fair and balanced as the Fox News?"

"I'm sorry. Can you repeat that? My head just exploded."

The conversation with your father made me laugh SO hard. It's so strange how different you and your father can be. I hope he appreciates you as much as he should even though he doesn't seem to express it much. Doesn't it seem like such a role reversal that the parent is telling the child to watch more TV? While the child has successfully been weaned off it? Bizarre.
(He doesn't seriously like Fox news, does he?)

Of course he really likes Fox News, that's the only place where his boy W. can get a fair shake.

Honestly, my father started out life as a Democrat. I don't know what the hell happened. Actually, I have some ideas but they're too lengthy to discuss here. Let's just say tax brackets and the phrase "pulled himself up by his bootstraps" are involved.
